Possibility of doing an MLItt or PhD in Ireland, centred around participatory research into social movement practice. Geared particularly towards activists interested in carrying out research useful to their movements.
* Participatory research on social movement practice:
Master's and PhD possibilities *
This is an invitation to people involved in social
movements - such as community development, the anti-
globalisation movement, feminism, ecology or alternative media - and who would like to explore the idea of researching and thinking about these movements in a supportive semi-formal context, leading to a Master's degree (M.Litt) or PhD in sociology.
The goal of this small-scale programme, which is now
seven years old, is to provide intellectual resources for social movements through participatory research geared to movement needs, as well as giving activists an opportunity for personal development which is supportive of their activism. The general area of research is social movement practice - what we do as activists, and how we could do it better.
In participatory research models, the researchers - often but not always participants themselves - work with movement participants to set a research agenda, steer the research process and discuss the results within the movement. The aim is to achieve an ethical and democratic research process which connects academic concerns to the needs and interests of movement practitioners.
