Introduction for MI list
Having just finished a PhD in late 2002 about the life historis of former nati-apartheid activists now in the government of the ANC I am now at the Centre for Civil Society at the University of Natal on a one year post doc. I was very involved in student and other political activism in the UK and have tried to continue this in Durban. I have helped set up the eThekwini Social Forum here in Durban and am working with local township activsits and NGOs in Durban and South Africa.
I am currently doing research on the emergence of new community based movements in South Africa in response to the neo-liberal policeis of the ANC. I am also undertaking research on the role of individual community activists in Durban as part of the first South African national social movements’ research project.
More broadly my research interests are the responses at the micro and macro level of labour and community movements, forms of popular political participation and local and global civil society responses to social and economic change.
