 Dear President Sexton,

I am Associate Professor of Hispanic Linguistics at CUNY’s Graduate
Center, and I am writing to you in response to your decision to
threaten striking NYU’s Graduate Assistants with the possible
withdrawal of their stipend for the Spring semester. I am sure that you
are fully aware of how seriously NYU’s public image has sufferred in
the past few months as a result of the bitter conflict and of your
handling of the situation. But your most recent decision to favor
repression over dialogue has landed a deadly blow to the university
community that you were hired to lead and represent. For the sake of
your, until now, highly respected institution, I sincerely hope that
you will withdraw your threat, celebrate the critical spirit and sense
of social responsibility of your Graduate students, and choose to act
as the leader of a democratic intellectual community rather than as the
ruthless manager of an academic-business empire.
Those of us who over the years have looked up to and collaborated with
your brilliant faculty and graduate students now have our eyes on you.
Please know that your decisions will have a profound impact on our
perception of and future relation with New York University.

 Respectfully,

 José del Valle
